It operates with a strong ethical foundation and partners with cheetah ambassadors to raise public awareness and funding . Founded in 1997 by Annie Beckhelling, it started with just two cheetahs and has since grown into a well-known and evolving conservation effort . Hermanus is a picturesque coastal town on the southern coast of the Western Cape South Africa. Nestled between the majestic Overberg mountains and the deep blue waters of Walker Bay, it is often called the “Whale Capital of the World.” Why Hermanus? Walker Bay’s unique geography creates calm, sheltered waters, perfect for the Southern Right Whales that migrate here from Antarctica every year between June and November. The town is famous for offering some of the best land-based whale watching on the planet, where whales can be seen just meters from the shore. Land-Based Viewing The Hermanus Cliff Path stretches for about 12 km along the coast, providing excellent natural vantage points. From benches, rocky viewpoints, or even restaurant terraces, visitors often spot whales breaching, spyhopping, or tail-slapping—sometimes less than 50 meters away. Boat-Based Whale Watching Several licensed operators run eco-friendly boat tours, taking guests closer to the giants of the ocean.
