Travel into the mountainous Hida region and arrive in Takayama, a beautifully preserved town known for its wooden architecture and traditional streets.Walk through the Sanmachi historic district, where dark timber merchant houses, local craft shops, small cafés, and sake breweries line the narrow lanes. First, visit Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s most visually distinctive historic castles. Continue to Nawate Street, a compact pedestrian shopping lane beside the Metoba River. Small cafés, snack shops, antique stores, and frog-themed decorations give the street a cheerful local character.
