Owakudani, a Japanese tourist attraction, is the remains of a crater formed by a volcanic eruption in the northern belly of the sacred mountain at the end of the Hakone volcanic activity about 400,000 years ago. It is also called "the Great Hell". Most of the spring water in Owakudani is poisonous. It was originally called Oojigoku, which was formed by the eruption of Mount Hakone 3,000 years ago. Hakone Shrine was founded in 757 by Manmaki Shonin on Mt. Hakone, which has been a sacred place for mountain worship since ancient times. It is a shrine with a long history and was worshipped by many military commanders such as Minamoto no Yoritomo and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Hakone Shrine has been revered as the Great God of Hakone, the general guardian of Kanto, since ancient times. It is worshipped as a god of good fortune that is very effective in traffic safety, the fulfillment of wishes, and good luck and misfortune. There are many attractions such as the 800-year-old cedar tree-lined approach to the shrine and the prefectural-level special natural monument, the Himesara Pure Forest. The treasure hall exhibits a statue of Manmaki Shonin and the red wood-handled short sword used by the Soga brothers.

Nakasendo Magome & Tsumago in 1 Day with Licensed Guide

This value-packed trip with a government-licensed and experienced multilingual tour guide is a fantastic and efficient way toexplore both of the ancient post towns! You can travel between Magome and Tsumago by infrequent direct bus. Nakasendo was one of the two highways during the Edo period connecting Tokyo with Kyoto, running through the Kiso Valley. Travelers at that time walked along the highway, stopping at "post towns" for rest. Some of those post towns have been well preserved and show tourists today exactly what Japan was like hundreds of years ago. Stunning forests, beautiful villages and traditions, we would love to recommend it to everyone interested in Japanese nature and history. This private tour is a walking day tour. A private vehicle is not included. Public transportation or local taxis may be used. Exact transportation costs can be discussed with the guide after a reservation is finalized. Please have Japanese Yen on hand for your transportation costs.
