Kinkaku-ji, officially named Rokuon-ji, is renowned for its Shariden hall completely covered in gold leaf. Originally a villa of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it was later converted into a Zen temple. Kiyomizu-dera, one of Kyoto's oldest temples founded in 778, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of some 30,000 Inari shrines nationwide, famous for its Senbon Torii. The seemingly endless path of vermilion torii gates, donated by individuals and businesses, winds through the forest. The shrine honors Inari, the god of rice, with foxes as sacred messengers. The fox-shaped ema are popular for creative doodles and prayers.
