Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia and the second-largest in Southeast Asia. There are some temples in the same site. Not far to the north are found the ruins of Bubrah temple, Lumbung temple, and Sewu temple.

The temple compound stood on the western slope of a hill, in a quiet region east of Yogyakarta, around 4 kilometers southeast from Ratu Boko archaeological compound.
