Mojiko Retro is a charming historic port district lined with beautifully preserved Western-style buildings from the Meiji and Taisho eras. Travelers can stroll the picturesque waterfront, admire the retro architecture, and soak in the nostalgic atmosphere of this former international trading hub on the Kanmon Straits.

The Kanmon Straits separate the islands of Honshu and Kyushu and are spanned by the striking Kanmonkyo Bridge. Travelers enjoy sweeping views of passing ships at this dramatic meeting point of two seas, and can walk the scenic promenade where the narrow channel comes to life.

Known as 'Kitakyushu's Kitchen,' Tanga Market is a lively covered shopping street with around a century of history. Stalls overflow with fresh seafood, local produce, pickles, and regional specialties, offering an authentic taste of everyday life and the chance to sample beloved street-food favorites.

Rising about 600 meters above the city, Mount Sarakura is celebrated for one of Japan's top three night views. A cable car and slope car carry travelers to the summit observation deck, where panoramic vistas of Kitakyushu, the Kanmon Straits, and the surrounding mountains stretch out in every direction.

Kawachi Fujien is a privately owned garden world-famous for its breathtaking wisteria tunnels and dome. In peak season the cascading blossoms in shades of purple, pink, and white create one of Japan's most photographed landscapes, while the surrounding hills offer maple foliage in autumn. Hiraodai is one of Japan's three great karst plateaus, a sweeping highland dotted with thousands of pale limestone rocks that resemble grazing sheep. Travelers can enjoy panoramic green vistas, gentle walking trails, and a refreshing sense of open space high above the coast.

Riverwalk Kitakyushu is a colorful waterfront complex beside Kokura Castle, blending shops, cafes, cultural facilities, and the Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art annex.
