Kumamoto Castle is one of Japan’s most iconic and historically important castles. Unlike many castles in Japan, Kumamoto Castle experienced real warfare—twice—and was never captured, earning a reputation as an unshakable fortress. The castle has long stood as a symbol of Kumamoto City, admired for its architectural beauty and commanding presence. However, in 2016, a devastating earthquake caused significant damage to its walls and turrets. While the main keep survived, much of the structure required restoration. Today, Kumamoto Castle is undergoing a large-scale reconstruction using a blend of traditional techniques and modern technology.
