Negombo or Colombo - Sigiriya
Sigiriya is home to the 5th Century “Fortress in the Sky” which is perhaps the most fantastic single wonder of the Island. It is also known as Lion Rock because of the huge lion that used to stand at the entrance to the fortress. Within its triple-moated defence the huge rock rises almost to a sheer height of 500ft. On its summit are the foundations of what was once a great and sumptuous palace and gardens complete with swimming pool. On one of the stairways the only known ancient work of Sinhala secular painting survived in the form of Frescoes of life sized damsels in all the freshness and delicacy of their original colour.

This annual event considered to be the largest Wild Elephant gathering in South Asia attracts many wildlife enthusiasts to take on a safari in Minneriya National Park to observe and experience this unique wildlife spectacle. In addition to the Elephant attraction at the Park, it also has an abundance of wildlife which makes it a preferred destination to go on a safari. This includes 24 species of mammals.

Kings ruled the central plains of Sri Lanka from Polonnaruwa 800 years ago, when it was a thriving commercial and religious centre. You'll find the archaeological park a delight to explore, with hundreds of ancient structures – tombs and temples, statues and stupas – in a compact core. The Quadrangle alone is worth the trip.
