You'll cross from Bali to Java by ferry, watching the narrow Bali Strait open up as you leave the island behind. The drive through the highlands to the Bromo area is your first taste of East Java's scale — a landscape of green valleys, volcanic ridgelines, and local villages that most visitors never pass through.

Day two starts at 3:00 AM. Your 4WD jeep rumbles out of the accommodation and onto the volcanic sand plains of the Tengger Caldera, one of the largest calderas in the world. As dawn arrives, the acid crater lake — turquoise, vast, and utterly surreal — comes into view.
