We will proceed to Mandela Gate Way where you will board on a ferry to Robben Island. Robben Island and its prison buildings symbolize the triumph of the human spirit, of freedom and of democracy over oppression. The remains on the island as a landscape reflect the history of the island since the 17th century and all the attributes that convey its value. As you make your way through the corridors of the prison on Robben Island, you get transported to a painful time in South African history. Standing in the jail cell that housed Nelson Mandela for so many years makes the emotional story of the South African struggle for democracy and equality hit home. A trip to Robben Island is a bittersweet experience, but it is highly recommended to anyone visiting Cape Town.
