Baden-Baden is a spa town in the Black Forest, in southwestern Germany and close to the French border. Thanks to its thermal baths, it became famous as a modern tourist city in the 19th century. Along the river Oos, the park-filled Lichtentaler Allee is the city's central promenade. The Kurhaus complex dates from 1824 and houses the elegant Spielbank (casino) inspired by Versailles. Its Trinkhalle market has a loggia decorated with frescoes and a mineral water fountain.

The Black Forest is a mountainous region in southwestern Germany, bordering France. Famous for its dense evergreen forests and picturesque villages, it is often associated with the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. It is famous for the spas and cuckoo clocks that have been made in the region since the 18th century. The region's largest town, Freiburg, is full of Gothic buildings and is surrounded by vineyards.
