A famous cat temple with a thousand lucky cats. Learn about the history of the Maneki-neko (lucky cat) with tour guide's explanation. Gotokuji is a Buddhist temple, and is widely recognized as the birthplace of the Maneki-neko (beckoning cat). According to legend, the temple’s cat raised its paw to gesture toward a passing samurai, which led to the samurai's good fortune and the temple’s prosperity.
