Otemon was the main gate of the former Edo Castle. Built not only for defense but to display the Shogun’s absolute power, its massive stones, unique masonry, and golden rooftop Shachihoko gargoyles were designed to overwhelm every visitor with sheer grandeur.

As you pass the Hundred-Man Guardhouse and climb the path toward the main citadel, a massive stone wall abruptly blocks your way. This is the Naka-no-mon Gate. Serving as the 'final fortress' protecting the Shogun’s most vital quarters, it showcases the strongest and most beautiful stonework technology in Edo Castle. Standing here, you can instantly see why this fortress atmosphere has inspired filmmakers in Western cinema.

This beautiful three-story structure is the Fujimi Yagura (Fuji-viewing Turret). Built in 1659, it is one of the few remaining authentic buildings from the Edo period, having survived both devastating historic fires and the air raids of World War II. It gets its name because, back in the day, the Shoguns could see Mount Fuji directly from here.

While it is now a beautiful lawn park, this very spot was once home to the Honmaru Palace, the residence of the Shoguns. This is a peaceful oasis of healing where tranquility and Japanese aesthetics are condensed, making it hard to believe you are in the heart of a mega-city. Based on historical landscape drawings, this garden was restored to recreate the exact view once enjoyed by the Edo-period Shoguns and feudal lords. It was opened to the public in 1968, coinciding with the opening of the Imperial Palace East Gardens. As you stroll around the large pond, you can enjoy landscapes that shift beautifully with every step—featuring a waterfall, islands, and elegant bridges. It is truly a masterpiece of Japanese garden design.
