El Pasaje Histórico 5 de Mayo es una obra hidráulica construida entre 1531 y 1604 conocida como caz o acequia maestra. Su función principal fue dotar de agua las huertas, así como dar movimiento a las norias de los molinos establecidos en los márgenes del río San Francisco. Esta obra, al igual que una importante red de sistemas de riego, quedó en desuso cuando los cultivos se fueron alejando del centro debido al crecimiento de la ciudad. Con el abandono, la presa que le abastecía desapareció y sus accesos se tapiaron quedando casi en el olvido. La acequia maestra pasó así a formar parte de una leyenda que habla de túneles con usos desconocidos, que recorren la ciudad por el subsuelo comunicando a sus principales edificios. En 2011, durante la construcción de un paso a desnivel, fue descubierto el desfogue que tenía en el cauce del Río San Francisco, develando una importante parte de la historia de Puebla.
