Gregory Lake was created in 1873 by the British era Governor at the time, Sir William Gregory, supposedly for the purpose of providing electricity. However the lake was mainly used for leisure and recreation after it was built. Shri Bhakta Hanuman Temple is built by Chinmaya Mission of Sri Lanka. Located in Ramboda on Kandy-Nuwara Eliya Road located approximately 30 odd kilometers North of Nuwara Eliya on A-5 route facing the Kotmale Reservoir. The Chinmaya Mission is a Hindu spiritual organization engaged in the dissemination of Vedanta, the science of the self as expounded in the Vedas, particularly the Upanishads, and other important Hindu scriptures including the Bhagavad Gita.

Located along the Talawakele–Hatton road in the Nuwara Eliya district it is a vision of striking green and foaming water down the falls. A captivating sight, it is highly recommended for nature lovers and bird lovers to pay a visit to this amazing natural preserve.  There are two observation points on the A7 highway from which the views of this water fall can be enjoyed. The lower observation point is even more special because, both Devon and St.Clair waterfalls can be can be seen cascading down the scenic mountains.

On the slopes of the majestic Kikiliyamana, the fifth highest mountain in Sri Lanka, lies the village of Shanthipura. This is the highest village in the entire island, located at an altitude of 7339 feet on the Kikiliyamana Mountain road from Nuwara Eliya. The bridge that was used to shoot the movie is now a discreet rusted piece of metal. It was dismantled once filming had concluded in order to protect the ecology of the surrounding environment. Filmmaker David Lean bought an old railway engine and some old discarded carriages from the railway department.

The Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall is one of the foremost convention centers found on the island. Located in the Cinnamon Gardens region of Colombo, Bmich has over 16,000 square feet of floor space.Open to the public in the year 1998, this convention center is a gift from the people’s republic of China in memory of Sri Lanka’s late prime minister Solomon Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike. The construction of this convention center was carried out as a joint project between Sri Lankan and Chinese workforce. Bmich is managed by the Bandaranaike National Memorial Foundation (BNMF).

This mosque is remarkable because the architecture is Indo-Saracenic, incorporating pomegranate-shaped domes. But the most extraordinary feature is that each brick is painted red or white and used in contrasting designs, which gave rise to its common name, the Red Mosque.However, there seem to be a ban on Muslim women to visit the mosque due to religious restrictions. As there have been many who requested for a section for the women; there appears to be plans for such a section, where women can do their prayers, to be built in the future. Thogh the red mosque is an islamic religious facility, visitors from other religions are eagerly welcomed.

Established as the Colombo Museum in 1877, the Colombo National Museum is the main museum in the country. The architecture and design of the premises are dominated by features of Italian architecture and the museum spans across two floors with multiple viewing galleries on each floor.It is home to many valuable and historically important objects such as the throne and the crown of the Kandyan Monarchs.The atmosphere is usually quiet and calming, and you can explore and wander around the premises at your own pace. If you are in the city, even for a short visit, we recommend that you pay a visit, because there is so much to learn and discover.

The Gangaramaya temple, Colombo is the most rich and famous in Sri Lanka. It was built just over 120 years ago and is dedicated to Buddhism. Among tourists, it is quite a popular place. It is a small religious complex with several buildings among which the Church, library, Museum, classrooms. The temple is mostly celebrated for its lavish architecture and statues showcasing Sri Lankan, Chinese, Thai, Burmese and many other artistic styles.  In the evenings, the pavilions are lit up with lights.

The railway line was started over a 150 years ago by the British. At the time, the Central Terminus was in a place near Maradana, The location can still be seen as it is now serving as the Sri Lanka Railway Museum. In 1877 the Coastal Railway Line was created, and that is when the first Fort Station came into use. The old Fort region of Colombo is one of the busiest sections of the city. It’s the trade quarter where all the goods that come in from the various countries are stocked and sold by wholesale tradesmen. It’s also where some important government departments such as the Sri Lanka Customs Headquarters, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and the Merchant Shipping Department.

A bazaar with definite Middle Eastern flair, the Pettah is where Sri Lanka’s multi-culturalism is at its most pronounced. The bustling bazaar of pettah is one of the oldest districts in Colombo and one of the most interesting places to spend a few hours. It is the most ethnically mixed place in the country. The crowds in Pettah can become overwhelming during the morning and late-afternoon rush hours, but the streets are still thronged during most daylight hours.  Large religious buildings represent a plethora of faiths, while more earthly pursuits can be found in market stalls and shops selling seemingly everything.

The Fort of Colombo begins where the Galle Face Green ends, at the old parliament building, now used as the Presidential Secretariat, and where the Beira Lake spills into the Indian Ocean. Along the foreshore of the Fort area is the Galle Face Green Promenade, built in 1859 under the governance of Sir Henry George Ward, the Governor of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) during British colonial administration. Fort is also home to the General Post Office, hotels, government departments and offices.

The Colombo Lighthouse was initially constructed as a clock tower in 1856 and completed on the 25th of February 1857 and the tower was designed by the wife of Governor Sir Henry George Ward. The construction work was undertaken by the Public Works Department. It was supervised by the Director of Public Works himself; Mr John Flemming Churchill. The Colombo Lighthouse and Clock Tower in Sri Lanka is one such noteworthy architectural site.
